It covers how organizations can prepare for such a scenario, as well as recommendations, proposed solutions, and the project’s next steps—moving into real‑world testing to validate the findings.&nbsp;Adalsteinn is a cybersecurity specialist at CERT‑IS focused on incident response, with an MSc in Information Security from ETH Zurich and prior experience at Cyren developing AI‑driven malware detection solutions. He co‑organized “Iceland Unplugged,” one of Iceland’s most extensive tabletop exercises on preparedness for a total loss of external connectivity.&nbsp;

Iceland Unplugged: What happens when a nation goes offline?

The presentation explores the evolution of online fraud in Iceland and how fraud patterns have changed and developed in recent years in line with technological advances and increased digital services. It discusses how fraudsters exploit weaknesses in user behaviour, technological environments, and information flows to deceive individuals and companies, and how this evolution has prompted new responses and increased collaboration between different stakeholders. Special emphasis is placed on analysing the latest fraud techniques, including the use of artificial intelligence, social media, and increasingly convincing deception tactics. The presentation also examines the impact of online fraud on public trust in the financial system and digital services, and how such trust is a key prerequisite for continued digital transformation.Finally, the talk addresses how we can prepare for the future through more targeted education, stronger technological defences, and increased cooperation between government authorities, financial institutions, telecommunications companies, and other infrastructure providers. The presentation encourages open discussion and shared responsibility in the fight against online fraud. Hákon Lennart Aakerlund has served as Chief Security Officer at Arion Bank since 2023. He has worked in the financial sector since 2008, specialising in cybersecurity and information protection. Over this time, he has gained deep insight into risk, response, and strategic planning in the security operations of financial institutions. Hákon has built a strong international network of partners across Europe, which has proven highly valuable to Icelandic companies, especially as he is Swedish and leverages both his Scandinavian and global experience to share the latest methods and standards in security. Dr. Reynir Smári Atlason is an expert in sustainable finance, environmental science, and renewable energy. He is currently serving as the Director of Sustainability at Creditinfo. Previously, he worked at Landsbankinn hf. bank, leading green bond issuance and carbon analysis. He served as a board member for IcelandSIF (sustainable investment forum) for three years and is a board member at Festa – center for sustainability. Reynir was a co-founder of Circular Solutions ehf. (later acquired by KPMG), where he helped pioneer green finance initiatives in Iceland.&nbsp;Reynir previously served as an Assistant Professor at the University of Southern Denmark’s engineering faculty and currently teaches sustainable finance and carbon accounting to graduate students at the University of Iceland alongside his work at Creditinfo. An award-winning researcher, Dr. Atlason has published extensively in peer-reviewed literature. Professionally, he combines academic insight with real-world innovation in sustainable finance and environmental strategy.&nbsp;&nbsp;
